The doors after the road

After the road, the doors matter more than the lake. Gateway Casinos Thunder Bay is open 9 AM to 4 AM, 7 days a week. Between 4 AM and 9 AM the building is closed. Holiday hours are not published, so call 807-766-7900 before a holiday visit.

Table hours and restaurant hours are not given in this guide. The same casino line answers both. Times on this page are Thunder Bay time, Eastern time. The clock below takes an arrival hour and shows whether the doors will be open.

How far the lines run

Across northwestern Ontario, towns sit far apart on the map. Red Rock and Nipigon, to the northeast, lie 91 km and 95 km away in a straight line. Westward, Kenora is 411 km out and Winnipeg, Manitoba, 598 km, while Duluth, Minnesota, is 283 km to the southwest. To the southeast, the line runs 425 km to reach Sault Ste. Marie on the map.

Flyers land at Thunder Bay International Airport, 10 km to the southwest. Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park is 30 km to the west, and Sleeping Giant Provincial Park 31 km to the east. Every number here is a straight line between map points. Roads run longer, and the Lakehead desk does not estimate driving times. The chart below draws the lines from Cumberland St. South.

The long road to Cumberland Street

On the floor

The casino lists 450 slot machines. Electronic table games sit in the E-Table Stadium, and in August 2025 the general manager confirmed they are on site. Live tables run with a dealer. In 2024 the casino's pages listed 6 live table games, including Blackjack, Mississippi Stud Poker, Ultimate Texas Hold'em and Roulette. Current counts, table hours and minimums are not published; a call to 807-766-7900 settles them.

No poker room is described by the casino. The Getaway Restaurant is right off the floor, with light meals, snacks, drinks and sports on TV, plus a bar with grab-and-go food. My Club Rewards membership costs nothing. Guests bring valid ID to the Guest Services desk, then collect points at slot machines and table games.

25 years by the lake

OLG opened the casino on August 28, 2000. In 2017 the Ontario government transferred it to Gateway Casinos, which committed under its agreement with the province to operate the facility for 20 years. A work crew took down the old OLG signs on the Park Avenue and Pearl Street sides of the building. New signs reading "Gateway Casino - Thunder Bay" replaced them on both sides.

Gateway Casinos & Entertainment runs the building that was formerly OLG Casino Thunder Bay. Travellers who knew the old name are looking for the same place. The casino marked 25 years in August 2025.

Online play in Ontario

Online gambling in Ontario is a separate matter from the casino on Cumberland St. South. The province's regulated market opened on April 4, 2022. iGaming Ontario conducts and manages online gambling offered by private operators, and the AGCO regulates it. A private online casino is legal in Ontario only with AGCO registration and an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario. OLG.ca is Ontario's government-run online casino.

The official list of regulated sites is the iGaming Ontario directory at igamingontario.ca. Players must be 19 or older and physically in Ontario while playing. On the home page, paid links marked Ad lead to a private online casino partner that this guide does not name. The partner can change, and it has no connection with the casino, Gateway or OLG.
